Well Mount studios are late 19th century purpose-built painters’ studios. In order to finance the continued running of the studios our client had to create a basement flat beneath the building.
The studio is an exercise in making a space seem calm and simple when, in reality, it is compromised by the need for flexibility and by the geometrical constraints of the existing building. Windows to the street have white shutters, which are almost always closed. The entire side wall is made into a flush white surface for hanging drawings and prints. When you shut the door to the studio behind you there is a sense of complete isolation, the only view from the room being the sky visible through the north-light.
